Contacts
Joe Higashi (L6/C3) – Owner of Higashi’s Chop Shop in Auburn. Found Screech bloodied and left for dead behind his shop and nursed him back to health. Since then, he has given Screech a job, set him up with contacts and some runs, and they have both profited from this arrangement greatly. Joe is definitely Screech’s main buddy, and they spend a lot of off-duty time together as well (when Screech isn’t making runs). Joe definitely gets annoyed when Screech goes catatonic for whatever reason (Screech probably still doesn’t quite know what triggers the flashbacks), especially when he’s at work, but he is trying to help find out what happened too. Screech tries to spend most of Monday – Wednesday at work, leaving the rest of the week open for whatever, but he has been known to turn down runs due to Joe needing some overtime. For all the times Joe’s helped out Screech, Screech does what he can in return. Joe’s not a smuggler par excellance or anything, but he does get the occasional “quiet” job in the shop.
Keller (L3/C5) – Ares Corp Exec. Initially a Johnson for an Ares run, Keller has kept in touch with Screech since then, ostensibly to provide access to Ares’ “Surplus Pool” and pointing to the occasional run (for which he tends to offer gear rather than straight cash). He has also been one of the few people who can reliably provide refills for his nanohive. Screech has wondered occasionally whether Keller’s motivation is purely monetary, or if there’s something more sinister in his interest, especially for a runner who doesn’t even know who he is. Mostly, though, Keller seems to be just what he claims, an Ares Exec looking to pocket some cred through the overstock or cosmetic rejection inventories.
Bio
Screech is a fragmented man with a knack for mechanics. The last thing he remembers is waking up in the alley behind Joe Higashi’s Chop Shop in Auburn, covered in blood and nearly dead. Joe took him in, nursed him back to health and quickly put him to work, leveraging Screech’s natural adroitness with machinery, both automotive and otherwise. The extent of his cyber and (very surprisingly) nanoware quickly became evident the first time he jacked into a vehicle. The spot welding lasers in his cybereyes were probably the most interesting at first, but he uses them so frequently now he doesn’t even notice them. He just can’t remember why or where he got them all. Working at the Chop Shop (both in the front public area and the “back” area) provides him with cred in the daytime, enough to fund his small flat nearby and his thirst for modding gear. Once Joe realized Screech didn’t have a legit SIN, he helped set him up with his Junichi alias and SIN, and also started putting him in contact with some of his contacts. On one of his first runs (that he remembers), the Johnson was an elf named Keller, who is deep inside Ares. For whatever reason, Keller has decided to stay in contact after the job went very well. Keller has since set him up with runs and also helped him acquire some of his more restricted gear from what Keller terms the “Surplus Pool.” Sometimes Screech wonders if Keller’s interest is purely monetary or if there’s some more insidious interest, especially with the cutting edge nature of some of his modifications. Most of the time, however, Keller is simply polite, inquiring after Screech’s health and such while keeping transactions fairly businesslike.
“Screech” comes from his first remembered run, where he nearly missed the drop-off and came to an ear-splitting stop from 115 kph. For the last 10 months, he’s been building up some cred, doing runs, and quietly listening for any info on who he used to be. Every couple of weeks at random, he loses himself for a few minutes as he’s assaulted by terrifying images of a harshly lit room, covered in blood with a man in a green mask leaning over him. He can’t help but think this is related to his wares, especially his cutting edge nanoware, but these flashes haven’t exactly been illuminating yet, nor has he figured out what triggers them. Hopefully they will be at some point.
In terms of personality, Screech is pretty laid back, keeps quiet and does his job well (helping Joe make more money legitimately than he ever had before, let alone the back area). He doesn’t go out often, feeling more comfortable under his Roadmaster than anything else, and he’s tired of watching people to see if they recognize him. The Roadmaster, of course, is his pride and joy. Asides from the sensor upgrades, engine mods, spoofing/morphing license plates, smuggler’s compartment and Tag Erasers, the main upgrade to the armored van is the Internal turret with an Ares MP-LMG mounted on gyrostabilizers. Quite a surprise when people aren’t expecting it, and hard to notice since it’s internal. Nitrous, smart tires, touch sensors, lock on countermeasures, manual override and a satellite communication array round out the package, locked up with a maglock + biometric sensors. It’s not the fastest rig for a run, but it’s got it where it counts, and there’s nearly no stopping it. He prefers the security of physically jacking in versus a wireless connection. He can tow his mobile vehicle shop if needed, but usually leaves it parked at Joe’s. Screech uses his Junichi SIN at work and the Hideo SIN while running.
After a largely successful run with the Yakuza, their interest has apparently been piqued in him.
